13 Principles/Practices
Principle six says that teachers should use diverse texts. To me the idea of diversity moves past the idea of different cultures. Although reading texts that include different cultures is very important for children, it is also very important for the teacher to use texts of many different levels. We have been taught in every class that all of our students will be on different levels and will learn in a different way. Therefore, it is very important for children to hear many different texts that are on different levels. I think it is also important for children to have access to the different texts. They need to be able to read these texts on their own. Conley also suggests that that texts used in the classroom have a variety of topics. Just because I like one type of books, doesn't mean all my students will enjoy that same type. Having many topics and types of books in the classroom will not only engage students, but make them eager to read.

I agree with all of your ideas here. I believe that it is important to read text that is above the level of the students in the classroom. If we don't, where will they hear advance text. Challenging students with text will increase their vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.
ReplyDeleteAs we have spoken about in CIR 412, not all students are interested in the same topics. Personally, I do not like to read about sports, but I am sure others will find this subject interesting. We are there to foster a love for reading, not force students to read what we like.
Great ideas!
